What is Progeline, and Why is it Beneficial in Skin Care?

As we work to build articles on a single ingredient at a time so that we can go into detail about what it is, how exactly it works, and why we believe it is beneficial for your skin care routine, we’d like to talk about Progeline.

Progeline In Detail

Progeline is the trade name for an effective skin care product that is made out of a few different ingredients. However, the most important of those ingredients is a component known as trifluoroacetyl tripeptide 2.

Although we’ve talked about peptides in detail before, here’s a quick refresher. 

Peptides are short chains of amino acids (under 50 of them, as over 50 amino acids in a chain is a full protein). Many of them are produced naturally in the body, and are an important focus in skin care because they have the ability to signal the cells and tell them what to do. That’s why skin care companies have come up with synthetic peptides — peptides made in a lab that can mimic the effects of natural peptides (like telling the skin to produce more collagen).

Peptides are named for how many amino acids they contain. Looking at trifluoroacetyl tripeptide 2, we know that it contains three amino acids (“tri” peptide). It was designed to work as an inhibitor to matrix metalloproteinases, or MMPs, as well as elastase. 

Why is this important for skin care? Because MMPs are the main extracellular matrix (ECM) enzymes that are responsible for degrading collagen, while elastase does the same for proteins. 

If you can stop MMPs and elastase from signalling the degradation of collagen, it can work to slow down the appearance of aging on the skin.

In addition, Progeline has been said to be able to decrease the synthesis of a protein known as progerin. Progerin has been scientifically linked to causing some of the most visible signs of aging on the face. The way that it does this is by interrupting the body’s ability to be able to repair itself. 

When skin can’t repair itself, collagen loss just continues to compound, leading to a loss of elasticity and firmness, as well as an increase in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

The Benefits of Progeline

Progeline has been said to be one of the best defenders against the aging process. Specifically, some of the reports benefits of Progreline include:

Collagen is one of the most important proteins that make up the connective tissue that supports the body.
