What is Matrixyl 3000, and Why Is It Beneficial In Skin Care?
When looking into skin care products, it’s helpful to be able to look at one ingredient at a time. When you do your research in that way, it makes it a lot easier to really find the ingredients that work well for you. It can also help you find functional beauty products that can follow through with what they say they can do, making your financial investment well worth it.
One of those ingredients, which we’ve chosen to use in multiple MiamiMD products, is Matrixyl 3000. While it may sound space age, Matrixyl 3000 is a science-backed, dermatology-approved skin care ingredient that really puts its money where its mouth is.
What is Matrixyl 3000?
Matrixyl 3000 is an ingredient used in skin care products that is considered a “synthetic peptide.” To truly understand how well Matrixyl 3000 works, it’s important to first understand what a peptide is and how it can help your skin health.
A Primer on Peptides
Essentially, peptides are pieces of proteins. These fragments are formed when multiple amino acids — which have long been considered to be the “building blocks” of proteins — are able to bond together.
The amount of amino acids that end up in that chain is essentially exactly how the peptides are named. For instance, if two amino acids are bonded together with a single bond, that is called a dipeptide (di meaning two, referring to the amount of amino acids in the peptide). If there are three amino acids, it is referred to as a tripeptide, and so on and so forth.
If you remember anything from your high school science class, you might be a little confused. If amino acids that are linked together are called peptides, what are proteins? Well, basically, they are the same thing!
The only difference between peptides and proteins are how many amino acids are linked together in the chain. Proteins are larger in size, with at least 50 amino acids (some of which may be “polypeptides” — long chains of peptides). Peptides are generally made of less than 50 amino acids.
Many peptides occur naturally in the skin, generated from various areas and designed to do various jobs. Some examples that directly related to the skin on the face are the peptides that are generated by the proteins that make up the extracellular matrix (ECM), like collagen, elastin, and fibronectin. When those proteins start to break down (through a process known as partial proteolysis), they form a special type of peptide known as a matrikine.
Matrikines are important because they help to regulate cell activities by using cell signaling. Continuing with the above example, when collagen protein begins to degrade, matrikines save the day by sending signals to produce newer collagen to the fibroblasts responsible for that type of activity. Without them, collagen would just simply be lost, leading to an increase in the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as a loss in the firmness and elasticity of the skin.
While it would be nice if the body would simply manufacture those matrikines on their own in enough quantity to help stop the skin from aging indefinitely, that just isn’t how the aging process works.
Instead, skin care companies have worked to create their own synthetic peptides, like Matrixyl 3000, to mimic their effects. These peptides were designed to help specific areas of concern, like minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, increasing the firmness of the skin, and helping to even out the skin’s texture.
How Matrixyl 3000 Works
Okay, now you understand a little bit more about what a peptide is and how it (and specifically, matrikines) can help improve the skin and fight off some of the more common signs of aging. But what type of peptide is Matrixyl 3000, and how does it work?
First and foremost, Matrixyl 3000 is actually the first matrikine peptide-based anti-aging ingredient ever used in skincare. It is made up of multiple matrikines — palmitoyl tripeptide-1 and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7.
While each of them provides benefits on their own, they work together to help restore and then maintain the youthful appearance and volume of the skin by telling it to start replacing the collagen that is being lost.
How Does MiamiMD Use Matrixyl 3000?
When it came time to incorporate Matrixyl 3000 into our skin care line, we wanted to use it in products that it could be used most efficiently. That’s why we use it in our Intensive Eye Repair Serum and our Age-Defying Lift & Firm Cream.
Our Intensive Eye Repair Serum was designed specifically to help renew the eyes and return their youthful sparkle and vibrance. It does that by using a combination of ingredients that were designed to work together to help reduce the appearance of crow’s feet, dark circles, and wrinkles. It can also help to prevent and fight under eye bags.
We selected Matrixyl 3000 as one of our ingredients because of its ability to send those all-important signals to the body that encourage the replacement of lost collagen, especially around the under eye area. Under eye skin that is firmer and stronger is also less likely to show the visible signs of aging, making it a win-win!
We then combined Matrixyl 3000 with a few other ingredients that can supplement those benefits, as well as add their own, unique advantages.
We chose Eyeliss (which helps to reduce the appearance of under eye bags by helping to reduce swelling through subtly draining fluid from the lower eyelid), Haloxyl (one of the most popular anti-aging treatments in the world, which helps to lift and brighten the under eye area), and Progeline (which can help reduce the amount of a specific protein that has been linked to promoting under eye aging).
You can also find Matrixyl 3000 in our Age-Defying Lift & Firm Cream. This cream, which can be used on the entire face, was created to help roll back the clock, transforming loose, saggy skin into firmer, more elastic, radiant skin.
When you use it, you’ll be able to help restore your skin to its youthful glow. It targets thin, sagging skin, and starts to work within just minutes of application, helping you enjoy a firmer, lifted face, while the long term benefits help those results make a lasting positive change.
We use Matrixyl 3000 in our Age-Defying Lift & Firm Cream for similar reasons to why we chose to use it in our Intensive Eye Repair Serum. We wanted the ingredient to help send those signals that skin needs to kick into collagen replacement into gear.
In addition, we also included two other ingredients that are also known for their anti-aging benefits. Progeline, just like in our eye serum, was included to help fight off the proteins that may be stopping the skin from being as firm and thick as it possibly can. We also included Argireline, which provides the unique benefit of creating nearly immediately firmer skin by working as a milder, topical version of Botox.
When applied directly to the face, it helps to prevent some of the smaller muscle movements that occur in the face when we smile, frown, laugh, etc. When combined, these three ingredients can take years off in just a single application.
How Should I Use Matrixyl 3000?
If you’ve decided to start including Matrixyl 3000 in your skin care routine, especially with MiamiMD products, make sure you follow a few simple guidelines to make your experience as optimal as possible.
First, and most importantly, any skin care routine should always include cleansing your face. In fact, it is recommended that you cleanse your face twice a day, morning and evening. This helps to remove not only the oils, dirt, and makeup that build up on your face through the course of a 24-hour period, but it also helps to clear the dead skin cells off of the surface of the skin. This can help reduce dullness, as well as reduce the risk of blemishes and other skin concerns.
Serums should always go on before moisturizers, as well. That means, if you’re using both of our Matrixyl 3000-containing skin care products, you’ll want to apply the Intensive Eye Repair serum first. Let it dry for at least a few minutes (or until it is dry to the touch) before applying the Age-Defying Lift & Firm Cream. That makes sure that each can be effectively absorbed, leading to quicker results.
In Conclusion…
Matrixyl 3000 is an excellent ingredient to look for if you’re hoping to reduce the impact of the aging process on your face.
While we all age, that doesn’t mean that we just have to sit back and let it be in charge. That’s why we included Matrixyl 3000 in two of our own products — our Intensive Eye Repair Serum and our Age-Defying Lift & Firm Cream.
See for yourself how Matrixyl 3000 works to give you that youthful glow by supporting skin health at its foundation!
