3 Best Ways To Prevent Facial Wrinkles
While aging is a normal part of life, premature wrinkles don’t have to be. It is possible to help prevent facial wrinkles, at least for a longer period of time, if you know the right tricks and have the right tools.
MiamiMD is proud to have developed our brand around finding ways for anybody to be able to enjoy firmer, younger looking skin by practically erasing wrinkles, but here are some tips to try and prevent them in the first place, especially if they are only just starting to appear!
What Causes Wrinkles?
Before we talk about preventing facial wrinkles, it’s first important to identify exactly what causes them.
Much like humans are complicated, complex individuals, the causes of wrinkles are much the same. There are many different factors that play a part in creating facial wrinkles, and you can experience either a single factor or multiple factors at the same time.
Aging
Obviously, one of the most major factors that contributes to the development of facial wrinkles is the normal aging process. While we’re on this Earth, our cells continue to divide and regenerate, causing skin turnover.
However, the longer we live, the slower those cells divide. As this regeneration slows down, it also leads to a thinning of the middle layer of the skin (known as the dermis).
The dermis is composed of a complex network of collagen fibers and elastin, which supports the top layer of the skin (the epidermis) and gives it elasticity. As the skin ages, the body’s production of both collagen and elastin also decreases substantially.
When it reaches a certain point, that network starts to loosen as well as unravel, creating depressions on the surface of the skin.
When combined with that fact that aging skin also has a harder time retaining moisture, heals far more slowly, and is much less efficient at secreting the natural oils needed to protect the skin, facial wrinkles are a natural side effect.
Muscle Contractions
Humans are naturally emotive. We express how we feel, whether good, bad, or in between, with body language and facial expressions.
Think about how you feel when you’re happy and break into a giant grin, or how you feel when you’re angry or frustrated and furrow your brow. Those small facial muscle contractions lead to wrinkles in a few specific places on the face — between the eyebrows (frown lines, sometimes referred to as the “11s”), the forehead, and by the corner of the eyes (crow’s feet).
That’s not to say that you should stop being expressive with your face! In many cases, wrinkles on the face are signs of a life full of smiling and laughter. However, it is possible to minimize the development of those wrinkles with topical skincare products, so you can enjoy your life without having the wear to prove it.
Sun Damage
Although it’s important to spend time outdoors, soaking up the vitamin D and getting away from all the demands of technology, sun exposure can also hasten and lead to the development of wrinkles on the face.
In fact, excessive sun exposure (and the ultraviolet radiation that comes with it) is another major contributor to premature aging and facial wrinkles. This type of aging is often referred to as photoaging, as that UV light exposure works to both break down those all important collagen fibers and leads to abnormal elastin production.
As the skin tissue is damaged by the UV light, metalloproteinase (an enzyme that can both produce and reform collagen fibers) is released. During the metalloproteinase production process, some of the healthy collagen fibers can be harmed.
This results in a disorganized formation of those fibers as they attempt to reform, known as solar elastosis. Every time the collagen is broken down and reformed, the process becomes less and less efficient.
Smokin
When skin is healthy and youthful, it is constantly regenerating. Older collagen gets broken down and removed from the body, and it is replaced with newly produced collagen fibers.
Unfortunately, smoking has been shown to prematurely and unnaturally significantly reduce the ability of the body to produce new collagen fibers. Over time, smoking can lead to the development of premature facial wrinkles, especially around the mouth.
The Three Best Ways To Prevent Facial Wrinkles
Now that you know what causes facial wrinkles, you’ll be better equipped to learn how to best prevent them. These methods can be used individually, but are far more effective when they are combined.
Change Your Lifestyle
First and foremost, if you’re a smoker, you should make every attempt to stop now. While that won’t reverse the damage that has been done, both on the inside of your body and out, it can prevent future damage from continuing to compound.
Smoking not only causes facial wrinkles, it can also cause lung disease, cancer, heart disease, and even problems with fertility. While quitting is a process, it’s one well worth doing.
In addition, helping to prevent facial wrinkles can start from the inside out, too. Specifically, knowing what to eat and drink to help support your body as it does its job can help you both feel and look better.
MiamiMD recommends our very own Total Beauty Matrix supplement to support the health of your skin, hair, and nails. With nourishing ingredients like vitamin C, hydrolyzed collagen peptides, lysine, and saw palmetto, this vitamin can help support your natural beauty, take years off your appearance, and help stimulate collagen production in a natural, healthy way.
Another important component to focus on is making sure that you’re drinking enough water every day. As our bodies are made out of mostly water, that water needs to be replenished daily to make sure that everything continues to function smoothly.
Remember that skin is an organ, just like the kidneys or heart, and the cells that compose it need water to run. The skin is also one of the first places that the signs of dehydration begin to show themselves, as the rest of the body soaks up the water before it makes its way to the skin.
The skin starts to get dry, itchy, flaky, and eventually will wrinkle. It’s far less resilient, which makes it more prone to injury as well. Focus on trying to get eight glasses a day minimum to help replace the natural fluid loss that occurs on a daily basis.
Establish A Skincare Routine
In addition to treating your body right on the inside, developing a skincare routine to help take care of your skin from the outside is also essential.
Because the face is so prone to developing wrinkles and losing hydration, it’s important to help support it by using products that can help it help itself.
Always look out for products that are paraben-free, fragrance-free, and BHA-free to make sure that you’re not putting harmful chemicals on your face while you try to help your skin. Many people also prefer to seek out cruelty-free options, so that they know their skincare products were not tested on animals.
Developing a skincare routine includes a few different products. You’ll want a cleanser (to clean the skin and remove dead skin cells) and a moisturizer, at the very least. Many dermatologists also recommend using a serum as a step in between the two, to help further hydrate the skin and seal in the moisture for an even greater effect.
Look for products that contain supportive peptides like eyeliss, which can help support the skin and promote more effective, more efficient turnover and fluid drainage from areas where it tends to pool (like the under eye area).
You’ll need to follow your routine regularly for at least three weeks before noticing a change, but that change has the potential to be substantial if you find the right products and stick to it! Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see a difference right away.
Use Skin Procedures Sparingly
It may be tempting to turn to cosmetic procedures like injectables and dermabrasion to help turn back the tide on aging, but be wary of these quick fixes.
While they may promise quick results, turning to these products too often or too soon can actually do more damage to the skin than help. Results are also only temporarily, needing to be repeated every few months, and have the potential to be fairly expensive as well.
There really is no miracle cure other than focusing on treating your body right, and sticking to a regular routine. Use skin procedures sparingly, and only as a last resort.
In Summary
When combined with a focus on treating your body well, and awareness of the major contributors to developing wrinkles in the first place, you can turn back time and discover the skin you’ve always wanted. It’s never too late to start taking care of your skin, and developing a regular skincare routine is a major part of that process.
Thankfully, if you do find you’re a little past wrinkle prevention, MiamiMD’s Instant Wrinkle Eraser is always an option to help you tackle those fine lines.
